Common Ground Producers & Growers has become an important part of the local food system in Kansas by connecting locally grown produce with neighborhoods that have limited access to fresh, healthy foods. Founded in 2014 by Donna Pearson McClish, the organization grew out of the legacy of the Pearson Family Farm, an urban farm that has served the Wichita community for more than 50 years.
Through its mobile farmers market and food hub model, Common Ground Producers and Growers works with local growers across several counties in Kansas to distribute fresh produce directly into food insecure and underserved communities. The organization has helped strengthen the regional food economy by supporting small farmers, increasing access to SNAP and senior nutrition programs, and creating opportunities for youth education in urban agriculture.
Its mission, “All Are Fed. No One is Hungry,” reflects the growing role Common Ground plays in improving food access, supporting local agriculture, and building a more resilient and equitable food system in south-central Kansas.
Today, Common Ground continues to expand its impact through innovative partnerships and community-centered programming. McClish shared exciting updates about the organization’s newest initiative— becoming an official Healthy Corner Store. The designation will allow Common Ground to establish formal store hours and create a dedicated shopping space for fresh produce directly on the farm.
While community members have long visited the farm to purchase vegetables, the new setup will make access more consistent and organized for neighborhood residents already relying on Common Ground for healthy food options.
The Healthy Corner Store effort grew from a partnership with Safe Streets Wichita led by Aonya Barnett. Through the collaboration, fresh produce will be distributed alongside supplies delivered to individuals experiencing homelessness and those recovering from substance use disorders.
Common Ground’s reach extends far beyond the Wichita city limits. The organization currently works with approximately 40 farmers and growers across Kansas while also partnering with organizations such as Practical Farmers of Iowa, Kansas Farmers Union, Missouri Farmers Union, The National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International and KC Farm School.
Through a grant and technical assistance program funded by the Patterson Family Foundation, Common Ground helps support cooperative development, farmer training, and regional food distribution networks.
Youth education and workforce development also remain central to Common Ground’s mission. Through partnerships with the City of Wichita’s youth summer employment program, students gain hands-on experience in farming and food systems. McClish proudly shared the story of one former participant who has since graduated high school, entered college, and now hopes to become a farmer himself. They are also entering their fifth season through the Growing Growers apprenticeship program with K-State Extension.
For McClish, the work is deeply personal. Reflecting on the Pearson family legacy, she shared, “My dad did the truck patch and my mother loved people.”
That blend of agriculture, generosity, and community care continues to shape Common Ground Producers & Growers as it builds a stronger, healthier local food system for future generations.
