We love going to farmers markets but understand they aren’t always easy to access because of timing or distance.
However, you can shop online using the Shop Kansas Farms (SKF) digital farmers market for easier access to local food. There are two different digital platforms we use.
SKF Facebook Group
On our SKF Facebook group, numerous farmers advertise their offerings. The farms listed there have already been vetted to make sure they have all the appropriate licenses to sell the food and food products. The SKF brand aims to build trust with consumers, so the people we allow to advertise are legitimate and trustworthy. The farms who list on our Facebook group do so for free: we don’t charge them anything; it's a service we provide to them.
It's easy to join the Facebook group by going here. You’ll notice we ask that you agree to our rules. We have learned the hard way that we have to have rules so we can maintain a civil society. If you’ve been part of our group, you know we don’t allow social media vitriol.
In addition, our rules help us stay focused on our purpose: to connect you to the farm and ranch families of Kansas to purchase the food they grow. We keep our focus strictly on food and food products raised on Kansas farms.
We also have helpful guides for you in our group. We cover topics like how much meat is in a quarter of a beef, what kind of licenses you need to sell your food and more.
If you want to search Facebook for a specific farm or product, find the magnifying lens icon and type in what you want to search for. It will pull up any post related to that farm or product.
SKF Website
While we love our Facebook group, we make it even easier to find local farms and food, through the Shop Kansas Farms website. Listed below are a few of the many robust elements we update continually because we have so many people go there to shop.
Shop
When you choose that selection, you are given numerous tools to find farms in the state with the Map View (shows all farms in the state), Select Category, Select County, Select Region or Select City. This unique feature brings the farms right to your laptop, phone or tablet.
Sell
If you want to sell food or a food-related product from a Kansas farm, you begin with theSell link and it walks you through the process.
Visit
This link takes you to places like pumpkin patches, U-pick farms, rural grocery stores, greenhouses and the Market of Farms events, which are held in various locations around the state.
Blog
This is a great way to read about the opportunities, activities and how-things-work articles in relation to connecting consumers to Kansas farmers, ranchers and growers.
How to build a local food community
In this section, you’ll be connected to both the Border Queen Harvest Hub and the Sedgwick County Harvest Hub and the ideas behind them. We have taken the local, state-wide reach of Shop Kansas Farms and dialed it down into hyper-local food systems that involve a community to engage in all three aspects of a food system: production, processing and distribution.
All of our decisions are guided by our purpose: to connect you to the farmers, ranchers and growers of Kansas to purchase the food they raise. Our digital farmers market has been created to help you access local food. Please use it and share it with others!
